Due to repeated pressure and friction, skin gets relatively hard and dry, resulting in callus. Callus generally forms on feet and hands. Though not harmful, it sometimes may result in skin infection or ulceration. Yellow or gray patches, dry and thick skin, bumps on the skin, and pain when you walk or wear shoes, are some of the crucial symptoms of callus. If ignored, they turn rough and large.
Calluses are not to be confused with corns which tend to be more localized and have a hard core which presses down on nerves and soft tissue. Remedies for corns can be found here, but below are some home remedies to get rid of callus. However, diabetic patients, and people with poor blood circulation and fragile skin must consult the health care professional before using any of these remedies.
Home Remedies for Callus
Mix 2 tbsp of baking soda in a basin of water and soak your hands and feet in it.
- Alternatively, mix 3 parts of baking powder in 1 part of water to make a smooth paste. Massage this paste on the affected area and wash off after 10 minutes. This will help remove callus.
- Mix 2 tbsp each of lemon juice and olive oil. Add baking soda to form a thick paste. Apply this paste on the callus and wrap a bandage over it.
2.Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar has anti fungal properties which helps to get rid of callus. Add a cup of apple cider vinegar to a wash basin filled with hot, soapy water. Dip your feet into it for 15 minutes. Make use of pumice stone to scrub your feet gently. Corns and callus will subsequently get softened and peel off after 7-10 days
Soak a cotton swab in vinegar and then apply it directly on the affected skin. This is a great remedy to remove callus.
Cut a lemon wedge and place it over the area with corn or callus. Secure it with the help of a bandage. Leave it overnight and remove in the morning. This must be repeated until the corn/callus disappears completely.
- Alternatively, apply lemon juice directly to the affected area. The acid content in lemon helps treat the callus and prevents its further formation.
The anti microbial properties of onion are useful to get rid of skin lesion like callus (1, 2). Place a slice of onion dipped in vinegar over the callus and secure it with the help of a bandage. Leave it overnight and remove in the morning. This process must be repeated until callus softens.
Crush 4-5 aspirin tablets in apple cider vinegar and make a paste. Apply this over the callus and hold it with the help of a bandage. Make use of pumice stone to scrub off the callus, after it loosens.
Note – Avoid using aspirin if you are diabetic or are allergic to aspirin.
- Alternatively, add some apple cider vinegar in the basin of water. Dissolve epsom salt in it. Soak your feet. Scrub them with pumice stone after 10 minutes.
Soak a piece of bread in ACV and place it on the affected area. Hold it with a bandage and leave it overnight. This is a very effective remedy for callus treatment.
Dip a cotton swab in some castor oil and place it to cover the corn. Wrap a bandage around it to prevent its movement. This is a natural remedy to remove callus.
Take 2-3 raisins and cut them in half. Put the inside of raisin on the affected area. Hold it with a bandage and keep it for the whole night. Practice this remedy until callus disappears.
Cut a small piece of pineapple and place it over the callus. Cover it with the help of a bandage and keep it overnight. Repeat this for a week until callus fades away.
Moisture worsens the condition of callus by spreading the infection. Sprinkle some cornstarch in between your toes to absorb the sweat and keep the area dry.
To avert callus irritation, use moleskin cloth. Cut the cloth into two half-moon shapes and wrap around the affected area (8).
Herbal Remedies for Callus
Chamomile has soothing effect on skin. It softens callus (9). Soak your hands and feet in diluted chamomile tea for 10 minutes. Then scrub with pumice stone. Utilise soap to destain your feet.
- Or else, mix a crushed garlic clove, and 1 teaspoon each of dried chamomile and lemon juice. Use this mixture on the affected area 1-2 times a day.
- Keep your skin dry and clean.
- Wear comfortable slippers and shoes that fit well (10, 11, 12).
- Opt for shoes made up of leather or other natural materials.
- Wear padded gloves in case you have calluses on your hand, in order to reduce friction (13).
- Apply moisturiser on the affected area (14, 15, 16).
- Avoid wearing heels and shoes that are uncomfortable and not of your size (17) (18).
- Don’t try to slice or cut the callus, as it may increase the infection (19) (20).
- Don’t wear shoes and sandals without socks (21).
